(n. 1 feb. 1918, Edimburgo, Escocia).

Escritora británica. Pasó varios años en África central, y regresó a Gran Bretaña durante la segunda guerra mundial. Hasta 1957 publicó sólo poesía y textos críticos, como sus ensayos sobre Mary Shelley y las hermanas Brontë . Su obra narrativa recurre a la sátira y el ingenio para presentar temas serios, que por lo general se refieren al problema del bien y el mal. Memento Mori (1959) es su novela más aclamada, pero la más popular es The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie [Jean Brodie en la flor de su vida] (1961; película, 1969). Entre sus últimas novelas, por lo general de tono más siniestro, se cuentan The Abbess of Crewe [La abadesa de Crewe] (1974), Muy lejos de Kensington (1988), y Reality and Dreams [Realidad y sueños] (1997).
